Summary

An investigation of udder morphology of Sarda dairy sheep was carried out in 1995 and 1996 on 5,210 yearlings belonging to 143 flocks participating in an AI program. The udder morphology for machine milking aptitude was scored on the basis of teat placement and cistern height by two classifiers using a linear scale from 1 (lowest) to 7 (highest). Heritability and genetic correlation with milk yield expressed as Mature Ewe Equivalent (MEE) were estimated by a bivariate analysis applied to a sire model using MTDFREML software. No relationships among sires were considered so the analysis involved 377 sires of the scored ewes. Fixed effects to be included in the model for the udder score were chosen according to previous ANOVA results. The two classifiers did not show significant differences so the final model for the udder score included the flock-year and year-lambing month interactions as fixed effects and the lactation stage as covariate. The model applied to MEE was the same except for the lactation stage effect. The score for udder heritability was high (0.55) with a moderate genetic correlation with milk yield (0.27). A further analysis was carried out after applying Snelfs procedure to the udder score in order to transform categorical scales in numerical scores for use in methods dependent upon assumptions of normality. Results did not show important differences. This study suggests that selection programs can be effective for modifying udder morphology and particularly the teat placement and cistern height traits. Further research is needed to better define udder traits and linear scales for use as selection criteria for the improvement in machine milking aptitude of the breed.
