In dairy ewes, the loss of milk production after weaning could be explained by the reduced frequency of udder emptying but also by the quality of stimulation of the udder by the lamb compared to the machine and by the break of the mother-young bond. A mixed system of suckling and milking, classically used during the suckling period to empty the udder, could be a good system for preparing the ewe for exclusive milking (adaptation of the milk ejection reflex). Nevertheless, nothing is known about the endocrine response to this breeding technique. The aim of this study was to compare the oxytocin discharge during suckling (in barn and in parlor) and during milking after weaning. Results were compared to milking without lamb, with their own lamb and with an alien lamb, in a mixed system of suckling and milking, using 12 multiparous ewes with good maternal behaviour and with two lambs (better udder emptying at suckling). There is no difference between the oxytocin discharge between suckling in barn and during the exclusive milking after weaning in our genetically well-selected Lacaune ewes. However, when milking occurs in a mixed system, the milk ejection reflex is significantly inhibited. Suckling in milking parlor does not reduce significantly the oxytocin discharge, suggesting a lack of environmental effect in the inhibition previously observed. Milking with the own lamb can restore the oxytocin discharge in milking parlor but the presence of an alien lamb is unable to reverse this inhibition. This inhibition seems to be due to the maternal selectivity developed in the 4 hours after parturition. Fortunately, this lack of milk ejection seems counterbalanced by a greater number of udder emptyings per day and has no serious deleterious effect on milk quality.
