The effect of the type of pulsator on milk emission kinetic parameters during machine milking and its variation during lactation were studied. Forty-six lactating Manchega ewes (Mn) were randomly assigned to one of two different types of commercial pulsator: A (120 p/m, 50% ratio) and B (90 p/m, 66% ratio). After a 5-week suckling period, milk emission kinetics were recorded during weeks 8, 12 and 16 of lactation.

The distribution of types of milk ejection kinetics (2 peaks : 1 peak : difficult to classify) in the experimental flock was 70% : 15% : 15%. This indicates that the ewes studied had a good machine milking ability. Milk emission kinetic parameters were not affected by the type of pulsator, but ewes milked with the pulsator A maintained the ejection reflex (2nd peak) longer during lactation (P<0.05). The percentages of second peaks lost between weeks 8 and 16 of lactation were 18% and 33% for A and B pulsators, respectively. Moreover, time of emission was shorter in ewes with a second peak and pulsator A (-6s; P<0.05).

During lactation, the milk emission time decreased slightly and remained lower (P<0.001) in 1-peak ewes (36s) than in 2-peak ewes (62s). The stage of lactation reduced the volume and flow of milk of the 2nd peak (-86ml and -24ml/5”, respectively; P<0.001), but the volume and milk flow of the 1st peak remained similar.
