Summary

Eight herds of Murciano-Granadina goat were studied throughout one lactation (from October 1997 to April 1998) during which a total of 1,306 udder’s halves from 653 goats were studied monthly. Tests carried out on the samples included bacteriological analyses (including mycoplasma) and somatic cell count (SCC) determination. Halves with persistent intramammary infection (IMI) numbered 94 (7.4%) and yielded a significant (p<.001) increase in SCC (geometric mean= 1,309 x10³ cells/ml) when compared to healthy udders. While infection by Micrococacceae, Enterobaceria, non-Enterobacteria and Streptococci yielded significant increases in SCC values, this increase was not significant when infection was due to Corynebacterim spp. or Mycoplasma spp. In infections due to Staphylococci, the SCC scores were according to expected values for novobiocin resistance-sensitivity species except for S. xylosus and S. simulans. The data suggest that 1,100 xl0³cells/ml is the best threshold, with 75% accuracy, for the differentiation between infected and non-infected goats’ half udders.
