Summary

A working unit of Group A32 of the International Dairy Federation was asked to make a proposal for quantitative requirements for milking installations for small ruminants. To begin the assignment, the working unit collected data on the standards used in different countries. An enquiry was sent to different countries where dairy sheep and dairy goats are bred and milked with milking machines. Fifteen countries have replied to the enquiry and have given information about their requirements for milking machines for sheep and goats. The results show that different formulas for effective reserve and vacuum pump capacity are recommended. Pulsation rate for goats is between 70 and 90 cycles/min. and 120 and 180 cycles/min. for sheep. Pulsator ratio is within 50 to 60% for goats and about 50% for sheep; in both cases, there are many exceptions. Generally, vacuum level is lower for small ruminants than for dairy cows: 36 to 45 kPa for goats and 33 to 46 kPa for sheep, depending on the type of milking machine and on the breed. No special requirements for clusters and liners have thus far been indicated in any country. Special devices like automatic cleaning are used but automatic cluster removal is not common. Data emerging from the enquiry will be the basis of a proposal for requirements in the coming years.
