Summary

Goats (n=41) from a commercial dairy herd (Murciano-granadina breed) were studied throughout lactation. Milk samples (772) were studied every 21 days for bacteriological status, somatic cell counts and differential cytology. Prevalence of infection was 5.7%. Most of the cells were identified (99.1%), probably due to the fixation system (in which milk was collected directly into cold formalin). The main group involved was PMN (74%), both in infected and uninfected halves. Only 5.6% of the total consisted of epithelial cells which decreased significantly with infection (5.7% versus 1.2%; p<0.01). Even the uninfected halves yielded a significant rate (74%) of PMN. Cytoplasmic particles accounted for up to 35% in the milk of the uninfected halves, decreasing, but not significantly, in the infected halves (31%). Halves with SCC lower than 100 x 10â yielded a high percentage of particles (up to 61%). In non specific DNA stained smears, cytoplasmic particles may be mistakenly counted as somatic cells; therefore, methods used for cows or sheep should be validated before applied to goats.
