Summary

The aim of this study was to assess reactions of fear in dairy ewes, using different fear inducing tests and the influence of the temperament on fear susceptibility. The study was carried out on 54 local Stara Zagora ewes of previously determined temperament. The animals were of the same age and lactation. The distribution of the temperament types was as follows: strong type, 14 ewes; intermediate type, 27 ewes and weak, 13 ewes. Two fear-inducing tests were used: open field test and surprise test, including measurements of parameters used to quantify fear. This study showed that the tests and parameters used to quantify fear in dairy ewes are sufficiently effective. The following parameters made the largest contribution to assessment of the fear reaction: feeding latency, feeding time, squares entered, immobilization and number of bleats. Fear reactions were influenced by the temperament. Significant differences were established between the strong types and the other types (P< 0.001 and P< 0.01) in both tests.
