Summary

An experiment with the objective of studying the effect of partial suckling on the annual production pattern of goats was carried out over two years with a total of 138 goats of Norwegian breed. Grazing was divided into mountain, first lowland and second lowland grazing periods. In the first year, dams with 0, 1 or 2 suckling kids were compared during mountain grazing. In the second year, dams with 0 kids and with suckling kids were compared during milking either once or twice daily.

Partial suckling resulted in reduced deliveries of milk and decreased fat content in milk. Annual production pattern of milk was improved. Milking once daily is recommended when goats and kids are separated during the night. Growth rate of suckling kids ranged between 150g and 190g. The potential for a profitable meat production on suckling kids seems promising. This may increase farmersâ income and possibly end the current practise of disposing of surplus goat kids at birth.
