Summary

A total of 24 lactating Ripollesa ewes were used to evaluate the utilization of ultrasonography in the study of cisterns in the udder during lactation. Ewes were in week 3 to 5 of the suckling period and measurements were performed with udders at similar stage of filling. To achieve this aim, the ewes were separated from the lambs and milked after injection of oxytocin. Scans of the udder (2 scans/half udder) were made 4h after milking using a 5MHz sectorial probe placed in the upper part of the intramammary ligament, near the mammary ganglions. After scans, conventional measurements of udder, cisterns and teats were performed. Cisternal milk was then evacuated using a teat cannula and alveolar milk was obtained by hand milking after a second injection of oxytocin. Glandular parenchyma (echogenic) and lumen of the cisterns full of milk (anechoic) were in evidence in the scans. Partitioning of total milk in the udder (cisternahalveolar), for an estimated yield of 1.621/d in a 24h interval, was 76:24, indicating the small size of the cisterns. Correlation coefficients between cisternal milk and measures of the cisterns in scans were higher (r=0.81 to 0.90) than with external measures of the udder (r=0 to 0.34). In conclusion, the ultrasonography can be recommended as a useful and quick tool for the in vivo evaluation of cisterns in sheep.
