Summary

The presence of antibiotic residues in ewe’s milk is a serious problem because of its negative effects on human health as well as on technological processes. It follows that the availability of rapid screening tests to detect the presence of these inhibitory compounds in milk samples is of fundamental importance. However, the current methods are quite often unreliable, at least when applied to ewe’s milk samples, because the experimental conditions have been optimized for analyzing cow’s milk.

In trying to set up experimental conditions to reduce false positives or doubtful results, we tested two different commercial tests (BRT^® and Delvotest^®) to detect antibiotic residues in ewe’s milk samples. Different conditions in preparing the milk samples were compared, Le. pre-heating of the samples (82°C for 10 min.) as well as the addition of a preservative (acidiol), and their influence on absorbance values at 450 and 650nm were tested. Morning milk samples were collected every two weeks from a group of 50 Manchega ewes, from lambing until the end of lactation.

The major conclusion which can be drawn from our preliminary results is that the addition of a preservative as well as the pre-heating of ewe’s milk samples drastically affect absorbance values and the results obtained with the BRT^® and Delvotest^® methods.
