Summary

Molecular techniques, mainly sequencing of the 16S rRNA genes, is a powerful tool for identifying isolates that cannot be accurately identified using conventional biochemical approaches. This technique is especially useful in certain genera such as Corynebacterium and Streptococcus. Using this molecular approach, two new species, C. mastitidis and C. camporealensis, as well as a species of streptococci previously isolated only from human specimens, S. parasanguis, have been identified as being responsible for subclinical mastitis in dairy ewes. These results indicate that, as with staphylococci, the range of corynebacteria and streptococci involved in mastitis is likely to be larger than the limited number of species routinely identified until now.
