Summary

Castilla-La Mancha is the second leading region in Spain in terms of goat milk production. There is a group of 23 farmers with Murciano-Granadina goats (the most important breed in this production) involved with milk recording since 1995. Up to the end of 1997, 5,836 lactations had been carried out, but only 1,863 had reached a duration of lactation of up to 210 days. The mean result for total milk production was 406.53kg in 241 days, or 1.68kg/day, with a composition of 5.25% of fat, 3.27% of protein and 14.78% of dry matter. The best results were in farms with once-a-day milking and with milking machines. Farms with less than 100 goats had better production than farms with more than 150, but worse composition results. Somatic cell count mean in bulk tank samples was 1,358,000 cells/ml. Key words: goat, milk recording, somatic cell count
