Summary

The somatic cell count is a good marker for estimating udder health and the suitability of the milk for cheese manufacturing. In order to determine the somatic cell counts of the milk produced by different sheep genotypes, a series of experiments was carried out on five different farms. Almost 900 heads of ewes belonging to the various genotypes were milked and sampled several times (weekly, fortnightly and four times weekly, depending on the farm) during lactation and the somatic cell counts of the individual samples were measured in laboratory. The following breeds and crossbred genotypes were included in the study: Merino, (Merino x Pleven Blackhead) F1 /Pleven F1/, Pleven F1 x Black East Friesian, Awassi, (Merino x Awassi) F1, Lacaune and British Milksheep.

Based on the results, the main conclusions may be drawn as follows:

- there were strong breed/genotype effects observed on the somatic cell counts of the milk;

- the somatic cell counts were affected by the hours of the day; in general, the values were higher in the afternoon milking;

- the ß-lactoglobulin genotype had a strong effect on SCC;

- variable phenotypic correlations were observed among the somatic cell counts as well as fat-, protein- and lactose % of the milk, and most of the relationships were negative.
