Summary

Mammary morphology traits were studied in a sample of 87 dairy ewes of different ages, 63 from the Manchega (Mn) and 24 from the Lacaune (Lc) breed, under the same production system. Measurements were made 2 hours before the afternoon milking at 10, 30, 60 and 120 days postpartum. Traits analysed were: udder size (depth, length and distance between teats), teat size (length, width and insertion angle) and cistern height. The model of analysis accounted for the effect of breed, parity number, stage of lactation and their interactions. Daily and total lactation milk yields were also recorded.

Length and width of teats were greater in Mn ewes (P<0.01) and increased with lactation (P<0.001). Cistern height was greater in Lc ewes (P<0.01) and decreased throughout lactation. Udder length, distance between teats and insertion angle did not exhibit differences between breeds (11.4cm, 12.4cm and 43.4°, respectively). Udder length and distance between teats decreased throughout lactation as did milk production. Parity number effects on mammary traits were similar in both breeds. Udder size, teat measurements and cistern heights reached the maximum values in the third and fourth lactation. In both breeds and all stages of lactation, positive correlations were observed between udder size measurements (depth, length and distance between teats) and milk production (r = 0.33-0.72; P<0.05), and in Mn breed, between udder size, teat length and width (P<0.05).
