Summary

Bulk tank milk samples (n=1947) from 8 herds of Murciano-Granadina goat were studied daily for bulk tank somatic cell count (BSCC) during the first five months of lactation. Intramammary health status was also studied. The herd BSCC geometric means for the whole period ranged from 626,600 to 1,191,200 SCC/ml. A decreasing evolution of BSCC was detected from the third month of the study period, coinciding with a new parturition period in the herds. Correlation coefficients between BSCC and the mean milk production per animal and the prevalence of clinical and subclinical mastitis were not statistically significant (-0.20, 0.45 and 0.53, respectively). The results obtained highlight the need for further studies to examine the influence of all the variation factors on the BSCC.
