The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between some teat characteristics [teat wall thickness (TWT), teat end reaction (TER) to milking and the vacuum needed to open the teat sphincter (VOS)] measured by prototype apparatus developed in our laboratory and the milkability of the ewes (lag time before the first milk emission, the total milking time (TMT), the mean and maximum milk flow (MEAF and MAXF), the time needed to reach this maximum milk flow (TMAX), the volume of machine milk (MM) and the cellular cell count (CCS). Fifty Lacaune ewes with identical milk production (1180 ± 31ml) and stage of lactation (77 days) were selected. Data were recorded in duplicate on each half udder during one milking except for CCS (mean of 3 milkings during lactation). Five classes of ewes were determined by the significantly different lag time before teat cup attachment and the first measurement of milk in the jar (from 7 to 9s, 10 to 12s, 13 to 15s, 16 to 21s and more than 22s). These five classes differed greatly in VOS (25 to 36 Kpa), TWT (4.52 to 4.80mm), TER (0.16 to 0.79), MEAF (1025 to 451 ml/mn), MAXF (1746 to 768 ml/mn), TMAX (42.5 to 125s) and in TMT (63 to 157s ) but not in CCS and MM. A significant correlation has been found between the lag time and VOS, TER, TMT, MEAF; between VOS and CCS, TMT, MEAF; TWT and MM; TER and MEAF. These results confirm the validity of our measurements of the teat characteristics and especially of the VOS for determining the milkability of the ewes.
