Summary

Thirty-six ewe lambs of Karagouniko dairy sheep were randomly allocated into three groups of twelve, one week after parturition. At weaning, 42 days after lambing, the first group (ME) was mixed with twelve mature Karagouniko ewes and the second group (MN) was mixed with twelve ewe lambs, creating two new groups of 24 ewes from weaning to the end of the milking period, while the third group (C) was kept unmixed. Milking was started at weaning, at 06.00 and 15.00 daily, and the behavioural response of the ewes to the milking procedure during the seven day adaptation period and the first seven days of the milking period was video recorded. Individual ewe daily milk production was recorded every 15 days for eight weeks after weaning.

The required forced movement of sheep by the operator to a milking stand was significantly (P<0.01) higher for ME than MN and C groups. Ewe lambs mixed at weaning (MN) with animals of the same size and experience did not need more time to enter the milking machine station than the unmixed (C) ewe lambs, while the ewe lambs mixed with mature ewes took significantly (P<0.01) more time to enter the stands of the milking machine during the period soon after mixing. The rank order changed significantly (P<0.05) in ME while it was not changed in MN and C groups after mixing.

Mixing of ewe lambs with mature ewes at weaning increases the time required by the animals to enter the milking stalls and the labour for animal habituation to the milking environment.
