Summary

Regarding improved dairy sheep breed, the influence of partial-milking during the suckling period is under debate. Therefore, we studied three partial-milking (PM) procedures during the suckling period (first month of lactation) of Lacaune dairy ewes. In all treatments, total milk yield was assessed by double-milking after a 4h separation interval and by dilution technique (D₂O) applied to suckling lambs. After weaning of lambs, ewes were subjected to usual milk recordings. In a first trial (T1) with limited amount of concentrate, the effect of number of lambs suckled (single vs twins) was tested under classical partial-milking procedure (C-PM), ewes being morning milked only. In a second trial (T2) with higher concentrate level, C-PM was compared to intensive PM (I-PM) including 2 daily milkings applied to twin suckled ewes. A control group of 12 ewes machine-milked since lambing was included. Single ewes gave more milk at partial-milking (400ml) than twin suckled ewes (177ml) and maximum milk was collected by I-PM (904ml). The double-milking estimation of milk yield during the suckling period, which was on average 2658ml, failed to detect any effect of partial-milking procedures. It seems that this method underestimated milk yield since the relationship between dilution technique results and lamb growth rates was realistic. Before weaning, the lowest milk yield was observed in the single C-PM group (2736ml) and the highest in twin C-PM (T2) group (4427ml). Using dilution technique estimation, the fall in milk production between day 22 and day 38, i.e. after weaning, amounted to between -27 and - 46% for twin suckled ewes while this fall was limited in single ewes (-19%). After weaning, all milk yields were very similar within trial and unaffected by partial-milking procedure during the suckling period, 2045ml in Tl and 2763ml in T2, respectively. In T2, ewes that were machine-milked since lambing had a reduced milk yield of 2426ml.
