Summary

Milk recording in Manchega sheep breed has been carried out according to official regulations using type A4 method until 1992 and AC thereafter. In both cases, quality has been considered. This paper summarizes the evolution of milk recording in recent years. There was an important increase in farmers involved, number of ewes recorded, accuracy of reports for farmers and facilities for analysis over the last years. Since 1992, somatic cell counts have been surveyed. Average data of milk recording are in 1997: 32,157 ewes recorded, 121 farms, 1691 standarized milk (120 days and 6% fat), 7.5% fat, 5.7% protein, 794,328 cells/ml. Those data place Manchega breed in a middle-low range in activity amongst the whole group of milking sheep breeds in the Mediterranean area (Barillet and Astunc, 1998). Several problems remain to be resolved: the principal one is to increase the number of farmers and ewes to a more high level in share with the whole population of Manchega breed.
