Summary

In order to study the possible effect of Î²-lactoglobulin genotype on milk components 1,100 heads of ewes belonging to several sheep genotypes were examined in an experiment. The ewes were grouped according to their Î²-lactoglobulin genotypes and milked and sampled several times during the lactation (weekly, fortnightly or four weekly from the weaning depending on the farm) two times a day. The fat-, protein- and lactose contents of the individual samples were determined and the groups (AA, AB, BB) were compared using âTâ test and phenotypic correlation. The following sheep genotypes were included in the study: Merino, (Merino x Pleven Blackhead) F₁, (Merino x Pleven Blackhead) F₁ x Black East Friesian, CigÃ¡ja, Awassi, (Merino x Awassi) F₁, Lacaune and British Milksheep.

Having the results of the experiment the following conclusions could be drawn:

â¢ there were significant differences among Î²-lactoglobulin genotypes within the sheep genotypes;

â¢ the fat- and protein % were almost equally effected by the genotype (AA. AB, BB), which had only weaker effect on the lactose content of the milk;

â¢ divergences could also be observed during the day and along with the lactation;

â¢ the phenotypic correlations among milk components were variable according to the studied genotypes (AA, AB, BB);

â¢ breed / genotype also had effects on the studied traits;
