Towards the aim of studying the milkability of the Tenerife type of the Canary Island dairy goat, a herd under two milking frequencies (x times daily) was evaluated during 1 st and 2nd lactation. We studied 52 goats that were machine milked from parturition according to the assigned milking frequency group: x1 (n=28) and x2 (n=24). Milk partitioning (MM, machine milk; MS, machine stripping milk; and RM, residual milk) was recorded in one control (day 135) in the 1st lactation, and in four controls (days 45, 90, 135 and 180) in the 2nd lactation. Milk emission (flow rate, volume and milking time) was recorded by manual method on two consecutive days for each goat in weeks 19 and 26 during the 1st and 2nd lactation, respectively.

Mean milk partitioning (MM:MS) ranged between 78-80:20-22 and 71-78:29-32, for xl and x2 groups, respectively, the differences being significant by milking frequency but not by lactation number. The MM decreased with stage of lactation during the 2nd lactation, but not MS and RM. Higher RM values (ml and % over total milk in the udder) were obtained in the xl milked goats (294ml, 13%) compared to x 2 milked (155ml, 7%), agreeing with milking routines and udder morphology traits. Maximum mean flow rate was higher than reported in other breeds and similar with regard to milking frequency (2.11 to 2.54 L/min). Machine milk emission time ranged in all goats from 30 to 210s and means varied with milking frequency, xl being higher than in x2 milked goats. In conclusion, Canarian dairy goats showed high milk flow rates with high machine stripping milk compatible with low milking frequencies and simplified milking routines.
