Summary

The udder traits, like type and relative size, may have important effects on milkability, milk yield and milk composition. Since the early 1990s, new genotypes have appeared in the milked sheep flocks of the farms in Hungary. The study of the characteristics of the following ones have been undertaken: Merino, (Merino x Pleven Blackhead) F₁ /Pleven F₁/, Pleven F₁ x Black East Friesian, Lacaune and Awassi. Fifty heads of each genotype were selected randomly and their udder traits (type, relative size and relative teat size) were determined according to the farm. Their milk production was measured four times weekly and fortnightly (morning and evening) and individual milk samples were taken. Rank correlation was used to determine the relationships among the studied characteristics. Based on the results, the following conclusions could be drawn: the more intensive milk genotypes had a larger sized udder and better udder types than the less intensive milkers; genotype effect could be observed on the frequency distribution of the udder traits; the genotype also had effects on the correlations among the udder traits and the milk yield as well as the milk composition.
