Summary

The region of Mount Stara Planina has always been an important center for the production of sheep milk in Yugoslavia. Sheep milk production is conducted within two systems: private farms, with capacity of 20-400 sheep, and state farms with a capacity of about 2000-4000 animals. Private farmers are organized through agricultural farms and the institute office for agriculture, who are the main supporters of improvements in sheep milk production. Both systems were included in a year-long investigation in which representatives of several sheep genotypes made the basis for the milk production. These sheep genotypes are equally used for the production of milk, meat and wool so the effects in milk production are rather poor. Milk yield during the 180 day lactation ranges from 60-70 1, while the content of milk fat averages 6.8%. Milk yield per animal is greater on private farms due to better nutritional conditions but state farms pay much more attention to genetic improvement of milk production. Ten years ago, thöprocess of crossing between Domestic Pirot and Svrljig sheep and East Friesian sheep was begun, resulting in a milk yield of 90 liters during lactation in F₁ generation crosses.
