Summary

Genetic and environmental dispersion parameters for daily milk yield (DMY) and fat, protein and lactose contents (FC, PC, and LC) were estimated in 1,805 Alpine and Saanen goats. During the years 1991-1996, 24,044 monthly test days were obtained from 57 flocks in Slovenia. PC improved, while FC and DMY showed fluctuations. The average milk yield per test day was 1980g. The average contents were 3.26%, 2.75% and 4.29% for FC, PC, and LC, respectively. Genetic and phenotypic parameters for test day records were estimated by REML using Powell’s algorithm. In the four-trait model, season (year-month interaction) and breed were included as fixed effects; litter size, day of lactation, and parity were included as independent variables; common flock, permanent environment, and animal (additive genetic effect) were treated as random effects. Early results showed that FC and PC on test day were negatively phenotypically correlated with DMY on test day, and correlations between LC and other milk traits were practically zero. Heritabilities for test day records of DMY, FC, PC and LC were 0.21, 0.16, 0.16 and 0.16, respectively. The greatest part of the phenotypic variance remained in residual. Additional studies for evaluations of genetic and environmental parameters for DMY, FC, PC, and LC are in progress.
