Summary

Due to the relationship between machine milking material and parameters, and once having selected the optimal cluster for ewes with the large teat size present in Manchega ewes, the aim was to study the effect of variation in vacuum level and pulsation rate on milk production and fractioning, composition and cell content, vacuum fluctuations close to the teat, kinetic milk emission and the incidence of teatcup detachment.

Sixty-six Manchega ewes were separated from their lambs at birth and milked under the same conditions (42 kPa of vacuum and 120 p/min. of pulsation rate) during the first 4 weeks of lactation, in a 2x6 milking parlour with 6 clusters and milk pipeline placed 0.9m above the platforms. The ewes were later divided into the experimental groups and milked under different conditions during 10 weeks: group 1= 42 kPa and 120 p/min., group 2= 36 kPa and 120 p/min., group 3= 36 kPa and 180 p/min. Pulsation ratio was 50% for all the cases.

Throughout lactation, average milk production and machine milk fraction were similar in all the groups, but stripping machine milk was lower in groups 1 (140ml) and 3 (148ml) than in “‘ group 2 (168ml), while the number of cells/ml was lower in groups 2 (388 xlO³) and 3 (158 x10³) than in group 1 (500 xlO³). Group 2 had the slowest milking according to the kinetic parameters. The other parameters measured were not affected by the change in vacuum or pulsation rate. From these assays we concluded that 36 kPa and 180 p/min. was the most suitable combination of parameters under the experimental conditions.
