Summary

A field trial using a split-plot design with 4 replications was carried out in the period 1990–92 at Ljubljana. The objective was to find out how 3 seed mixtures: (I) red clover, white clover, timothy, perennial ryegrass, meadow fescue, smooth meadow grass, (II) white clover, cocksfoot and (III) white clover, perennial ryegrass, responded to rates of N application (0, 200, 400 kg ha⁻¹ year⁻¹ N) in terms of botanical composition and herbage yield under a regime of 6 cuts year⁻¹. In these first years, differences between the mixtures were very small. The effect of fertilizer N on herbage DM yield was small (3-year average difference: 1.10 t ha⁻¹ with 200 kg ha⁻¹ N and 2.35 t ha⁻¹ with 400 kg ha⁻¹ N), and on clover content, large (3-year average content: 54 % without N, 10 % with 200 kg ha⁻¹ N and 2 % with 400 kg ha⁻¹ N). When compared with the 2 other mixtures, cocksfoot in mixture with white clover grew slower in the establishment phase and showed a stronger yield response to N fertilization.
