Summary

Grazing ruminants deposit large amounts of urine N to grassland soil in small concentrated patches, from which high N losses might be expected. Denitrification and N₂O emission from urine-affected areas were measured during 14 days after urine application, using a soil core incubation system with and without acetylene. Urine application significantly increased denitrification and N₂O emission rates, with maximum rates of 0.93 and 0.64 g m⁻² d⁻¹ N, respectively. N₂O emission was largely due to nitrification when the soil water content dropped to 15 % (v/v). Total N₂ + N₂O losses during a 14-day period were estimated at 22 to 27 % of the urine N applied.
