Summary

In 1992, the mean annual surplus of N, P and K on 48 dairy farms in Vlaanderen in Belgium was 303, 29 and 111 kg ha⁻¹, respectively. The most important factors that contributed to the surplus of N were the input of manure from pig and poultry farms and the input of N fertilizer on grassland. In terms of decreasing the N surplus the introduction of fodder beet is suggested as a better alternative than increasing the maize area.
