Summary

In an ensiling experiment involving forage of the first and fifth cut, the influence of botanical composition on fermentation quality and losses was investigated. The forage of the first cut was harvested at two different stages of maturity. The experimental forages were ensiled in small-scale laboratory silos.

The botanical composition on the one hand and stage of maturity and number of cuts on the other hand affected nutrient concentration and thus fermentation quality and in-silo losses. Grass-rich silage of the first cut had a bad and herb-rich silage of the same cut had a very good fermentation quality. All silages of the fifth cut had a good fermentation quality.
