Summary

Grassland fertilizer recommendations for The Netherlands have been developed from empirical experimentation and a modelling of grass growth and mineralisation of soil nitrogen (N). They are of limited predictive value and a better understanding of the many interactive and determining processes are required so that more robust predictive models can be developed. Current schemes for advising on N for grassland in the UK and The Netherlands have developed from similar principles. In the UK the results of experiments have been studied to derive a soil N supply classification and total seasonal fertilizer requirement which is then apportioned according to defoliation pattern. In The Netherlands N requirements per cut are aggregated to obtain the seasonal requirement and more formal rules are given to adjust for drought conditions.

Recommendations have been developed to reduce emissions of N to the environment while maintaining grass production. To minimise such emissions organic manures must be integrated into the overall management strategy. Research findings have allowed more precise guidance to be developed as to the N availability from various slurries and solid manures applied in different ways to varying soil types at different times of the year. To maintain optimum grass growth and to promote livestock performance the mineral content of the herbage is important in terms of both major and trace elements.
