Summary

To reduce ground water and surface water pollution, the Dutch authorities’ aim is to achieve a ‘balanced phosphorus (P) fertilization’ on all farms from the year 2000 onwards. Balanced P fertilization is defined as ‘a P application rate that equals the amount of P removed from the land in the form of harvested crops, plus admissible P losses’. However, on dairy farms it is more convenient to define balanced P fertilization on a farm basis since there is a large variation in P removal between the various fields. The aim of this study is to explore the possibilities of achieving balanced P fertilization on Dutch dairy farms, using a theoretical model.

The results indicate that balanced P fertilization can be achieved if the following measures are adopted: stop purchasing P fertilizer and roughage; increase the milk production per cow; reduce the percentage of forage maize grown to not more than 20 % of the farm area; only purchase concentrates which have a low P content.

For dairy farms on well drained sandy soils, the P surplus may be as low as 2 kg ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹, whereas on poorly drained soils, the mean P surplus is 4 to 6 kg ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹. It must be emphasized, though, that these results only pertain to those farms which have soils with a sufficient to good P status.
