Summary

Herbage quality of white clover and perennial ryegrass grown in mixture was determined in different plant fractions at 1, 2, 3 and 4 t DM ha⁻¹ in spring growth and each regrowth. The treatment before each regrowth was simulated grazing, namely, defoliation at 2 t ha⁻¹ DM. In summer regrowths white clover flowers constituted up to 50% of the white clover dry matter. The clover flowers had a considerably lower digestibility than the leaves and the digestibility of grass leaves and grass stems were between those of the clover fractions.

The clover leaves was the fraction with the highest N concentration at all levels of herbage mass during the whole growing season. In clover flowers the N concentration was a little lower than in the leaves, additionally lower in grass leaves and lowest in grass stems.
