Summary

The effect of different levels of water supply on the productivity of a temperate high quality pasture during its growth season (late spring and summer, namely, 4 Decem-ber-20 March) was studied in order to determine its production function. Five rain simulation patterns, ranging between no water restriction and heavy drought, were applied on 4 replicates of 2 m × 2 m plots by weekly irrigations and/or covering during rainfall. Treatments were: NWR (no water restriction) which received 436 mm during the experimental period; NY (normal year) receiving the average annual rainfall, 227 mm, of 50 years before the trial; AY (actual year) receiving the actual rainfall, 289 mm, of the season; DY (dry year) receiving 131 mm and VDY (very dry year) receiving 40 mm. Dry matter production (DMP) was measured each time the pasture reached 20 cm height. Total evapotranspiration (TEP) was calculated from the soil water balance for each treatment. Results of DMP:ETP (kg ha⁻¹: mm) for NWR, NY, AY, DY and VDY were: 7065:296; 6582:288; 4918:205; 4463:188 and 3914:111, respectively (P<0.01). A linear regression of relative DMP (DMPmeasured/DMPmax) against relative ETP (ETPmeasured/ETPmax) was calculated using the data for single harvests (16 points). The equation obtained was Y = 0.783 X + 0.190 with r² = 0.853.
