Summary

The effect of a spring application of nitrogen (N) on grass/white clover swards was studied in two trials on a clay soil. In a cutting trial N application in spring was combined with two cutting frequencies.

On an annual basis the response to 100 kg N varied from 3.7 to 13.1 kg DM per kg N, while the clover content decreased 10 % on average. N application had no effect on annual N yield. Cutting frequency had no consistent effect on dry matter (DM) yield, while the N yield was higher with more frequent cutting. In a second trial the effect of N application was studied under cutting and grazing conditions. Fertilizer N had no effect on annual DM yield. Grazed plots produced more DM than cut plots. It was concluded that an N application in spring increased the DM yield in the first cut without affecting the clover content too adversely.
