Summary

Cold is a factor which causes overwintering problems. These include frost, ice encasement and low-temperature fungi. Heaving, too, can be a problem. Winterhardiness is extensively documented, but more information is needed about the physiology of plants under stress conditions and about the interactions between the different factors involved.
