Summary

The response of forage sorghum to water application was studied in the field by growing the crop on a water gradient. Low grain forage hybrids (LGH) showed greater sensitivity to changes in water availability and yielded more than high grain forage hybrids (HGH). When grown without irrigation on winter stored soil water, maize yielded less than HGH. In-vitro dry matter digestibility increased in LGH with decreasing water availability but in HGH it was independent of water application. We suggest that under limited water supply, the stem of LGH can serve as an alternative to the grain of HGH in quality, as well as, in dry matter production.
