Summary

The current status in western Europe of the production and utilization of grass, legumes, maize and other forages is discussed against the background of declining production-related support and increasing environmental requirements. It is recognized that intensity of production must be decreased on some farms. Key targets for research and practice are suggested. These focus primarily on the need to understand whole farm systems, and to develop, particularly for high yielding animals, new systems which are sustainable economically whilst not exceeding emission limits. Such systems should preferably be based on grazing, make full use of recycled nutrients, utilize the high nutritive value and low support energy input of legumes, and encompass increased biodiversity. They will only be widely adopted if they are low risk, not labour intensive and require only small capital investment.
