Summary

Specialization and strong intensification of farms have inverted the traditional nutrient flows in European agriculture during the last decades. On intensive dairy farms, the input of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) via fertilizers and purchased feed by far exceeds the output of N, P and K via animal products. This imbalance leads to substantial risks of pollution of the environment. In order to change this situation two approaches differing in the acceptance of a reduced production level per ha have been followed by several research groups. The “high intensity approach” integrates a complex of technical and management measures for cycling of nutrients within dairy farms, but nevertheless ensures very high milk production level per ha. The “low intensity approach” is based on less intensive land exploitation and on using permanent grassland with grass/white clover swards. The results of modelling studies obtained so far indicate a wide range of possibilities to reduce the nutrient surplus. Both concepts can be successful to approximately the same extent. But the second approach is in better agreement with the need to decrease over-production and to ensure appropriate grassland utilization for conservation of the landscape. To attain the environmental standards, the N fertilizer application on grazed grassland and the stocking rates in currently intensive dairy farms require to be reduced generally. Re-integration of arable cropping and animal production within the same farm and preferably using permanent grasslands with diverse intensity would probably offer the best perspective for ecologically sustainable farming.
