Summary

In 1992, field trials were established at Banská Bystrica to evaluate the production and persistence of white clover varieties in monoculture and in mixture with perennial ryegrass. Of eight British clover varieties, Siwan, Donna and Olwen yielded the best in 1993 with 3.49, 3.10 and 2.32 t ha⁻¹ DM, respectively, while the Czech variety Paste-vec achieved 3.02 t ha⁻¹. The new Czech variety Hájek yielded best with 3.60 t ha⁻¹ DM. The Belgian variety Merwi (3.09 t ha⁻¹ DM in monoculture) was also used in mixtures with perennial ryegrass varieties Melinda and Merganda. These mixtures yielded 7.71 and 7.38 t ha⁻¹ DM, respectively. According to a Swiss point system of evaluation, the varieties Merwi and Nesta showed the best persistence in the winter 1992/93. The clover varieties Donna, Olwen and Siwan, and the mixtures of clover variety Merwi with Merganda or Merlinda ryegrasses showed the best summer drought tolerance.
