Summary

Results of pasture experiments from 1985–92 showed that the yield, palatability and intake of herbage depended on grass species and the contribution of Trifolium repens in the sward. No significant differences in herbage intake by dairy cows were found between the rotationally grazed grass swards dominated by Dactylis glomerata, Alopecurus pratensis and Lolium perenne. However, the sward dominated by Festuca arundinacea was grazed very unwillingly and herbage intake was low.
