Variability in the anatomy of young, fully developed leaves of perennial ryegrass was studied in 4 cultivars. Leaves showed a wide variation in number and size of scleren-chyma bundles and in thickness of their secondary walls. This variation existed within each cultivar and could rarely be related to cultivar or part of the growing season. Such variation could be exploited in breeding for improved digestibility.
