Summary

Evolution of diversity of grasslands in relation to extensification has been assessed at different levels of organisation of the management system in a region of the French Pyrenees (field, farm, landscape). Botanical composition is used as indicator of ecological diversity by reference to a model establishing ecological features from relationships between botanical composition and management pressure. Diversity dynamics, as the result of plant community responses to farming practice factors, evolve in a different way in the actual management system, towards either heterogeneity or homogeneity, depending largely on the level of organisation studied. This apparent contradiction in the dynamics of evolution is indicative of the unsustainability of these management systems.
