Summary

The surface run-off and soil losses from a permanent pasture, 30% slope, were compared to those from a burnt pasture, a cultivated short term crop and continuously ploughed soil in a Mediterranean environment (Sardinia).

In the 3 years of the trial 49 run-off events were recorded. The annual average runoff values were very low: 3–4 mm in the permanent and burnt pastures and 15 mm in the annual forage crop. The run-off coefficients were always lower than 2% on an annual basis for all treatments and reached peak values of 17% and 23% in the annual forage crop and the continuously ploughed treatment, respectively. The effect of fire on the surface run-off was not appreciable, and the botanical composition was only marginally influenced. The soil erosion on the cultivated soil (2.4 t ha⁻¹ year⁻¹) was about tenfold that of the undisturbed and burnt pasture (0.2 t ha⁻¹ year⁻¹) and about half that of the continuously ploughed soil (5.01 ha⁻¹ year⁻¹).
