Summary

The utilization of N from cattle slurry applied to grassland by sod injection and shallow injection in spring and summer was determined by means of apparent N efficiency (ANE) in terms of DM response to N and apparent N recovery (ANR) in terms of the % N applied in cut herbage. Sward damage caused by the injection techniques was also assessed. In spring, the ANE’s of slurry N applied via sod and shallow injection on sandy soils amounted to 16.1 and 17.2 kg DM per kg N applied while the ANR’s were 42 and 50%, respectively. The ANE’s of slurry N applied via sod and shallow injection on a heavy river clay soil in spring were 4.4 and 8.1 kg DM per kg N, while the ANR’s were 16 and 33 %, respectively. These values were much lower than on the sandy soils probably due to sward damage and N losses. In summer, ANE’s of slurry N applied via sod and shallow injection on sandy soils were 12.7 and 11.4 kg DM per kg N and on a heavy marine clay soil, 11.9 and 9.2 kg DM per kg N while the ANR’s amounted to 40, 43,42 and 32%, respectively. On heavy clay soils, sod and shallow injection in spring and summer caused sward damage leading to a reduction in DM yield particularly in the first cut after injection. On sandy soils, shallow injection resulted often in a somewhat better N utilization than sod injection probably caused by a lower ammonia volatilization. Injection techniques appear to be less suitable for heavy clay soils because of excessive sward damage.
