Summary

A lysimeter experiment was set up in Brittany (free draining soil, oceanic climate, 550 mm winter drainage) to compare nitrate leaching losses from a pure ryegrass sward (supplied with 250 kg ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹ fertilizer N) and from a grass-clover sward receiving no fertilizer N, both rotationally grazed by heifers. The lysimeters appeared to be representative. Nitrate leaching was low in all situations (12 to 30 kg ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹ N) except when urine return was close in time to the drainage period in October and thus could not be taken up by plants or immobilized in the soil. Lower leaching losses from the grass/clover sward could be explained by a reduction of clover fixation in urine patches and a very efficient use of soil nitrate by associated grass.
