Summary

On an experimental dairy farm the nitrogen budget of the soil/crop system was estimated by calculating the differences between N input and output of grassland, maize and fodder beet. Grassland N input was high compared with maize and fodder beet N inputs because of the excretion of faeces and urine during grazing and a higher N fertilization level. The N surplus from the budget for grassland was also higher than for the arable crops, but this did not lead to more N leaching. The variability of nitrate concentrations in the soil solution was high and was mainly caused by dung and urine patches. An important part of the N surplus from grassland is expected to accumulate as organic N in the root zone.
