Summary

Soil compaction was studied in a field experiment on grassland on a sandy soil from 1989–92. Three treatments were applied: Control (A), Moderate compaction (B) and Severe compaction (C). Treatments were combined with 3 rates of fertilizer N. Compaction decreased herbage DM yield and N uptake during the wet spring of 1989, but thereafter compaction increased yield, in particular for cuts harvested after dry periods. Compaction increased N uptake from the soil and DM yield at a given N uptake.
