Summary

A method for the estimation of bacterial protein in grass silage was developed. Leucine-¹⁵N and diaminopimelic acid (DAPA) were used as marker substances. Lactobacillus plantarum was used as an inoculant. A procedure for the isolation of bacterial fractions of high purity from silage samples was developed. The results obtained showed good agreement between the two marker methods. In grass silage of 29% dry matter about 1.7 g bacterial N kg⁻¹ of silage dry matter, corresponding to about 4% of total N, was determined 2 days after ensiling. After 91 days this value had decreased to about 1.2 g bacterial N. Based on these values and assuming that the bacterial protein fraction is resistant to proteolytic degradation in the rumen, we estimate that bacterial protein from high N low dry matter grass silage represents roughly 10% of the silage protein that escapes ruminai degradation.
