Summary

A field experiment was conducted to assess the effect of nitrogen (N) fertilizer type and urine on nitrous oxide (N₂O) flux from grassland in early spring. Mean flux of N₂O was significantly higher from fertilized than unfertilized grassland. The total N₂O loss from unfertilized grassland was 23 g ha⁻¹ N in 23 days, and that from fertilized grassland ranged from 49 to 64 g ha⁻¹ N. There were no statistically significant differences in N₂O fluxes between treatments supplied with fertilizers containing ammonium or nitrate. Fluxes from urine treated grassland were significantly higher than from grassland supplied with mineral N fertilizers. Nitrous oxide fluxes from urine treated grassland were positively correlated with soil temperature during the first 14 days after application. There was evidence that nitrification was the main source of N₂O in urine patches.
