Preliminary studies of the exchanges of methane (CH₄) between two grassland soil/sward systems (in the absence of animals) and the atmosphere during winter periods are described. The data indicate that even during winter conditions there was a net absorption of CH₄ which, on average, was equivalent to 4.9 and 0.8 g ha⁻¹ C daily by a well drained and a poorly drained soil, respectively. Although these values are small when compared with recent estimates of the daily emission from a typical dairy farm (i.e. 432 g ha⁻¹ C), they are likely to influence net CH₄ budgets over large spatial scales. A further study indicated a strong net emission as soon as sheep started to graze and that in their absence the soil/sward may have acted as a sink. Measurements are continuing to quantify this further.
